I Live in California. Can I Get a Divorce in Las Vegas or Does It Need to Be a Divorce in California?

The short answer to answer this question is, “No”.
In the past, I have had clients that live in California (typically in Southern California, what is up with you guys & gals from Los Angeles, Orange County & San Diego??? LOL)
Anyways — the story that I have heard from many past residents of California that come in to get a divorce is that they are wanting to do their cheap divorce out here in Vegas … because of the following two reasons:
- It is FASTER to File Your Divorce in Las Vegas ….. In Nevada your divorce can literally be finalized in as little as 2-3 weeks vs. ONE WHOLE YEAR out in California.
- It is CHEAPER Out to File Your Divorce in Las Vegas ….. Filing fees in Nevada are $299 vs. filing fees in California which run $435 (as of November 2018)
The way people in California would get away with it in the past is that they would have a friend or family member sign an affidavit of resident witness which another resident of Nevada would swear under oath that the person at question IS IN FACT … a resident of Nevada.
In Nevada … you MUST be a resident of the State of Nevada for at least 6 weeks AND you must intend on living here for the foreseeable future to be considered a resident of the state … (and be able to file a Cheap Divorce in Nevada).
